These are the aspects that have
influenced the lens through which I
see the world and how I am
perceived by the world. Paintings I
create are subjective responses to
these perceptions. The content of
each painting is pontifical yet
powerful and the colors are in
agreement. Not only is the color an
aesthetic choice but also it is meant
to be “loud,” calling attention to
the viewer to “look at me.” My
paintings seek to compel a dialogue
inter-and intra-personally.
What has and does
inspire you?
My work originates from my social
perceptions. I hear a phrase, a
song; I see an event, a movie, a
television show; something moves
my sense of right and wrong. My
heightened sensitivity reacts
vehemently to my understanding of
the world I choose to see and I feel
compelled to make a statement. I
choose to use what is at my
disposal in this age of information
and technology. Therefore I gather
mental and digital images from the
Internet to construct my images
and paint them onto canvas. I use
oil on canvas as a way to pay
homage to the tradition use of
paint; marrying the modern aspect
of technology to the historical facet
of painting.
What are you
currently doing?
Currently my work is a response to
state of hip-hop music and its in-
fluence on our society. My
interests tend toward class issues
in America, gender discrimination
and roles in America, and the
institution of race. As the work I
create develops, it takes more risks
in the statements projected and
consequently the colors become
more pronounced. As I work on
each painting, it becomes a
meditative process that allows me
to think about the content
intensely which eventually evolves
into a simple understanding and I
become more at peace. Spending so
much time with an image/ painting
allows me to accept things I cannot
change. It also comforts me that in
the end I will have a finished piece
that others will be able to have a
dialogue with. My paintings are a
response to an challenging world.
